Smaller projects
Digitalise Your Micro Business
The fastest route for very small businesses. Covers up to €10,000 of eligible costs at 50% in Malta and 60% in Gozo, non-repayable. Ideal for a marketing website, an off-the-shelf software rollout, or hardware and training that go with it. The current round is set to close 30 June 2026.
Larger builds
Digitalise Your SME
A higher ceiling for serious digital projects: a direct grant of up to €120,000 on eligible costs (plus up to 7% indirect), again at 50% in Malta / 60% in Gozo. Funds custom web and mobile apps, eCommerce, CRM/ERP, cloud and integrations, and advanced tech such as AI, IoT and cybersecurity, which can unlock higher aid intensity.
Can I get a government grant to build software in Malta?
Yes. The Maltese government, through Malta Enterprise, runs digitalisation grants that co-fund software projects, websites, web and mobile apps, eCommerce platforms, CRM/ERP systems, automation and AI. The two main schemes are Digitalise Your Micro Business and Digitalise Your SME, and both are non-repayable.
How much funding can I get for a software project in Malta?
Digitalise Your Micro Business covers up to €10,000. Digitalise Your SME offers a direct grant of up to €120,000 on eligible costs, plus up to a further 7% in indirect costs. Both pay 50% of eligible costs for Malta-based businesses and 60% for Gozo-based ones.
What software costs are eligible for a Malta digital grant?
Eligible costs typically include custom websites and web applications, mobile apps and PWAs, eCommerce platforms, CRM and ERP systems, cloud computing, automation and integrations, and, for the SME scheme, advanced technology like AI, IoT and cybersecurity. Off-the-shelf software, hardware and training on the tools you acquire can also qualify.
Who qualifies for the Digitalise Your SME grant?
Micro, small and medium enterprises (under 250 staff and within the EU SME turnover and balance-sheet limits) registered in Malta or Gozo. Large companies above the SME threshold fall outside these two schemes, though other Malta Enterprise routes may apply.
When is the deadline to apply?
The current round of Digitalise Your Micro Business is set to close on 30 June 2026. SME scheme deadlines have varied across rounds, so confirm the live cut-off before relying on it. Because grants must usually be approved before you commit to the spend, applying early matters.
Is the grant repayable?
No. Both Digitalise Your Micro Business and Digitalise Your SME are non-repayable grants, you are reimbursed a percentage of eligible costs rather than taking on a loan.
What is the €300,000 de-minimis cap?
De-minimis is a ceiling on the total state aid a single business can receive over a rolling three-year period, €300,000 under current EU rules. If you have already drawn significant government or EU support, it can reduce or block a new grant, so it is worth confirming your figures before applying.
Can I combine a digital grant with other Malta incentives?
Often, yes. Schemes like MicroInvest (a tax credit on eligible hardware and software) and TradeMalta (support for international expansion and multilingual sites) can usually run alongside a grant, provided the same cost is not claimed twice. The right stack depends on your project.
Do I have to use a specific software developer to qualify?
No, you choose your own supplier. Many founders work with a studio that can both structure the grant application and build the product, so the eligible scope and the delivered software line up. That is exactly how we work at Cobalt Studio.
